When passengers attack

GMG Airlines Flight 42 Kuala Lumpur to Dhaka, Tuesday morning Thailand time. While the flight was over Thailand there was apparently a passenger making trouble and then fighting with another passenger.

The captain declared an emergency, and landed at the old Bangkok Don Muang airport. GMG is a budget airline with headquarters in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

There was quite a lot more panic and misinformation that one would desire. Airport officials said at first that the plane was being hijacked. Spokesman talked about a passenger making a threat. Two hours later now, and it is still is not entirely clear what happened up there. Bottom line, though: About 70 people on board and all safe, troublemaker in custody, flight to continue on without him.

It wasn’t a bad idea to use Don Muang airport for this emergency rather than the spiffy new Suvarabhumi. Don Muang is also a military base, with military police immediately available – and the security at Suvarnabhumi is bad. Really bad.
