One of the greatest theme songs in history is for the old cowboy show The Lone Ranger. It used the William Tell Overture, with a voiceover:
… Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. The Lone Ranger rides again!
The government announced that (Thai) Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej will pay an official visit to Vietnam on Monday (March 24) to familiarise himself with his Vietnamese counterpart and to strengthen ties with the neighbouring country.
Yesteryear, to be precise, December, 1976 (PDF file, Page 86):
Interior Minister Samak Sundaravej said that Vietnam had set February 15, 1977, as its “D-Day” to invade Thailand.
Samak also warned Thais of a danger from Vietnamese refugees many of whom have infiltrated on orders of the Hanoi government. “Most of the 76,000 post-1975 refugees in Thailand are Vietnamese,” he warned.
Ah, those were the thrilling days. The Vietnamese communists had won the war a year and a half earlier, and Interior Minister Samak and his close personal political friend Prime Minister Tanin Kraivixien were summarily executing drug suspects. The even brighter days of organising protests against “the dog-eaters of the Vietnamese embassy” on Wireless Road still lay in the future.
I’m pretty sure the Vietnamese army didn’t invade Thailand in the second month of 1977. Could someone ask him to confirm that, maybe during his Hanoi press conference?
