Those Mideast cables

The UN agency in charge, the International Telecommunication Union, now says those Internet cable cuts in the Mideast “could have been an act of sabotage.”

Others had said this from the start. Coincidences happen, but when five cables fail at once without any evidence of actual accidents, you have to wonder. Weeks later, even the UN now wonders. There is a good graphic of the cables involved, and where they run at the link above or, separately, here.

There is no lack of speculation. One possibility considered by bright people from the start was a “test run” for Internet sabotage. Another was that Iran did it to cut off its bloggers, while others just as conspiratorially see Iran as the victim.
