USA – NAVY TO COMMISSION GRIDLEY ON SATURDAY (FEB 09/DOD)  DEPT. OF DEFENSE —
The U.S. Navy will commission its newest Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer on Saturday in Miami, the Dept. of Defense reports. Adm. James Stavridis, commander of U.S. Southern Command, will preside over the ceremony. The Gridley is the 51st of 62 planned Arleigh Burke destroyers.
The ship is named in honor of Capt. Charles Gridley, who commanded the cruiser USS Olympia during the Spanish-American War.
The battle of Manila Bay began with the famous line by Commodore George Dewey to the Olympia’s commander: “You may fire when you are ready, Gridley.”
