Bush in Thailand for a policy speech

The Associated Press has flatly declared that “the United States is now winning the war that two years ago seemed lost.”

Despite the occasional bursts of violence, Iraq has reached the point where the insurgents, who once controlled whole cities, no longer have the clout to threaten the viability of the central government.

Bush with Thai troops, October 2003Now this is once again past the responsibility of a news agency, to predict the future. News agencies should report, and let us make up our own minds. But since the AP insists on doing this sort of thing, how telling is it that the inventors of “accountability journalism” are declaring that President George W Bush has won the Iraq war on his own watch?

Bush comes to Thailand next week (August 6 and 7) and will be making his last US foreign policy speech on Asian soil. It will be interesting to see what the US leader has to say about Iraq in that speech.
